Ingmar Bergman Saraband

August 18th, 2008

Saraband is a 2003 movie directed by Ingmar Bergman. It was the last of his movies to be released theatrically, and is the sequel to his 1973 movie Scenes from a Marriage.

Saraband brings back the characters from Scenes from a Marriage - Johan and Marianne - and gives them a new crisis to deal with in the form of Johan’s son Henrik. Henrik wants an advance from his father so he can buy a cello for granddaughter Karin, who is auditioning for the European music conservatory. Johan considers the proposal and eventually decides he’ll follow through.

But Henrik is a controlling teacher to Karin, and eventually - after some deep thought - Karin confronts him on this and asks him to ease up and let her live her own life. Henrik relents… but then tries to commit suicide soon after.

Johan, hearing the news, has a panic attack, and seeks solace in the bed of Marianne. She allows him, and the movie essentially ends with her saying that they kept in touch until, one day, she was no longer able to contact Johan.
