Okay, English speakers. It’s time we had a little chat.

Now. I know you’re used to names the likes of Bill, Ted, Chad, John, and the like. You know, very familiar, English names that roll off of both the tongue and the fingers easily. You’ll almost never have to worry about misspelling those names just because they’re so regular to you.

That said, every now and then you ARE going to have to spell names of people from different countries. It’s an inevitability; and though it’s not that big of a deal when it just comes to searching for that person online, if you were to, say, write a paper on them, you’d want to make sure you get the name right every time.

‘Igmar Bergman’, given the nature of this blog, is a perfect example. ‘Igmar’, as far as we know, is not a name. It’s just a typo. The guy’s name is ‘Ingmar’. Ingmar Bergman. If you want to pay proper homage to these people then you really need to get their names right. Yet thousands don’t every day and, in their haste to get the results they want, end up with a fictional person born from a typo, and little else.

Do the right thing. Spell the name correctly. You’ll be a better person for it, at least in my eyes. (And don’t worry, there’s lots of Ingmar Bergman stuff for you on this blog. You’ve been saved.)

Saraband is a 2003 movie directed by Ingmar Bergman. It was the last of his movies to be released theatrically, and is the sequel to his 1973 movie Scenes from a Marriage.

Saraband brings back the characters from Scenes from a Marriage - Johan and Marianne - and gives them a new crisis to deal with in the form of Johan’s son Henrik. Henrik wants an advance from his father so he can buy a cello for granddaughter Karin, who is auditioning for the European music conservatory. Johan considers the proposal and eventually decides he’ll follow through.

But Henrik is a controlling teacher to Karin, and eventually - after some deep thought - Karin confronts him on this and asks him to ease up and let her live her own life. Henrik relents… but then tries to commit suicide soon after.

Johan, hearing the news, has a panic attack, and seeks solace in the bed of Marianne. She allows him, and the movie essentially ends with her saying that they kept in touch until, one day, she was no longer able to contact Johan.

The Ingmar Bergman Collection is a series of movies, recently re-released on DVD, showcasing the life work of acclaimed director Ingmar Bergman.

Though the collection does not cover every last one of Bergman’s movies it does span the entirety of his career, traveling from his initial film script for Torment to his final project, Saraband, in 2003.

The Collection is comprised of 30 films, two of which had never been released on DVD previously (Dreams and Farodocument 79). The collection also includes a book, Bergman: A Life In Films, which covers all of the films in chronological order.

The films include (but are not limited to) Torment, To Joy, Summer Interlude, Smiles of a Summer Night, The Seventh Seal, The Magician, The Silence, Cries and Whispers and After the Rehearsal.

Be prepared for a lot of hunting and a hefty price, though - the Ingmar Bergman Collection is limited in stock, and will probably run you at least 200 pounds.

After 89 long and fruitful years, Ingmar Bergman died on July 30, 2007. The year before he’d undergone difficult surgery on his hip, forcing him into a difficult period of recovery. He lived out the last of his days on the island of Faro, where he died one night in his sleep.

His funeral was delayed until August 18, however, and was limited to a private affair with a few close guests and little fanfare. The funeral and the burial took place on Faro, though Bergman had originally intended to be buried near his wife’s grave in Sweden (his name had been carved onto the headstone prior to his death, presumably in preparation for the inevitable).

Many think that the man known for his lonely pictures died quite fittingly on an island that reflected that sense of loneliness, as Faro has a population of close to 600 people only.

The film, released in 1979 (it was actually Ingrid Bergman’s final theatrical release), details the relationship between a famous pianist and her neglected, almost estranged daughter. The latter confronts the former, making for a dramatic conclusion. Will they be reconciled? Watch the movie to find out.

The film was highly acclaimed for its acting and storyline, winning a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film. More, it was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Ingrid Bergman got the honors) and Best original Screenplay.

Though a Swedish-language film, Autumn Sonata proved an international hit, and continues to serve as an inspiration to movie makers and other storytellers to this very day.

Here is the trailer for Ingmar Bergman’s Hostsonaten (Autumn Sonata) starring Ingrid Bergman:

Swedish director Ingmar Bergman was easily identifiable for his humanist films that delved deeply into the human spirit and investigated topics sometimes passed over by his contemporaries. Among his best films – a sentiment shared by Bergman himself – was the Ingmar Bergman Persona film.

Persona begins with a series of montages – seemingly random in nature – and then proceeds into a straight-forward narrative about an actress who has gone mute and the nurse who cares for her. The nurse talks about her life to the seemingly comatose actress, who in fact is faking her stony disposition and is actually discussing the nurse via correspondence with somebody else. By the end of the film the nurse has seemingly convinced herself that she is the actress, and stands in for her when a male visitor comes to see the actress; however, the two women still part come the finale, their personas mixing and becoming one.

Here’s a teaser of Ingmar Bergman’s Persona
