Ingmar Bergman Persona

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Swedish director Ingmar Bergman was easily identifiable for his humanist films that delved deeply into the human spirit and investigated topics sometimes passed over by his contemporaries. Among his best films – a sentiment shared by Bergman himself – was the Ingmar Bergman Persona film.

Persona begins with a series of montages – seemingly random in nature – and then proceeds into a straight-forward narrative about an actress who has gone mute and the nurse who cares for her. The nurse talks about her life to the seemingly comatose actress, who in fact is faking her stony disposition and is actually discussing the nurse via correspondence with somebody else. By the end of the film the nurse has seemingly convinced herself that she is the actress, and stands in for her when a male visitor comes to see the actress; however, the two women still part come the finale, their personas mixing and becoming one.
