Ingmar Bergman Dies

Monday, July 14th, 2008

After 89 long and fruitful years, Ingmar Bergman died on July 30, 2007. The year before he’d undergone difficult surgery on his hip, forcing him into a difficult period of recovery. He lived out the last of his days on the island of Faro, where he died one night in his sleep.

His funeral was delayed until August 18, however, and was limited to a private affair with a few close guests and little fanfare. The funeral and the burial took place on Faro, though Bergman had originally intended to be buried near his wife’s grave in Sweden (his name had been carved onto the headstone prior to his death, presumably in preparation for the inevitable).

Many think that the man known for his lonely pictures died quite fittingly on an island that reflected that sense of loneliness, as Faro has a population of close to 600 people only.
